Hoorah!
American Sniper is a movie essentially about life. Not in the normal sense, or shall I see not in the way most movies take a look on life. American Sniper looks upon life through the scope of legendary Chris Kyle's sniper, and races like a bullet to its target.
Directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle, I can confidently say that my first outing at the cinema this year was a successful one. American Sniper hits its target and hits it hard.
This movie is of course led and completely controlled by Bradley Cooper. Per my opinion this is the best performance that this juggernaut of an actor has given to this date. It is an emotional thought out and completely wonderful performance. Definitely one for the ages. Don't even think about doubting Cooper's Academy Award nomination for this movie. He absolutely deserves it. This movie either lived or died on Cooper, and of course this artist sprung it to life.
Ahhhh Clint Eastwood. Love him or hate him, you cant deny what this man has done for the film industry. Flash back about 10 years ago. Without a doubt Eastwood was one of the best directors in Hollywood. Nowadays Eastwood has grounded himself in mediocrity(see Jersey Boys), and I find this a shame because I know the talent this man has. Well I am ecstatic to report that Eastwood is back on his game for American Sniper. This movie is shot crisp and clean. The actions scenes are brutal and satisfying, while the darker, quieter scenes are shot with an ambiance of depression. Yet it is with these scenes that I find the nagging part in my brain about this movie.
American Sniper at times can have trouble finding its footing. It drags here and there and many elements are put into the movie that interest you, yet aren't explored to a full extent. This is most notable when Kyle returns home between his tours of duty. Knowing he cant live a quiet life you can see the pain and suffering just straight through Cooper's brilliant acting chops. There is no need for the dragging moments. Let Cooper show us himself. Through Cooper we see the effects of PTSD, yet we don't get the full effect of it with the movies script.
Despite this American Sniper is a movie that everyone should see. It is a movie that deserves its record breaking box office voyage. It is a movie that deserves its recognition at the 87th Academy Awards. And it is a movie that will symbolize the patriotism of America for years to come. So set your sniper sights on American Sniper. It's a can't miss.
