A game that defines not one, but two generations.
I have always heard about just how good The Last of Us was on PS3, but unfortunately I did not own the console. Many speculated it to be the most defining game of last generation. Well now that I have a PS4, I was excited to get my hands on this game. I can tell you that The Last of Us more than lives up to its hype, because this is truly a game for the ages.
Set in post apocalyptic America where the world has been raged by a fungus like plague, TLOU puts us in control of Joel, a hardened survivor with a troubling past and a fuel to survive. Joel is tasked to smuggle a young girl named Ellie to a group known as the Fireflies, due to an inspiring step of progress that is linked with her biology. And it is with this story element that we come across the greatest chemistry in gaming history in at least my opinion. Joel and Ellie's relationship is at the forefront of this game, as his gruff survivor personality mixs with her fun loving charm to create something truly special. The way the characters grow throughout the game is a delight to behold.
The gameplay is also superb. TLOU is technically a third person survival horror game, and does ever bit of justice to a genre that has been severely lacking. The stealth is easy to use, and at times is completely necessary because this game can ask you to do some pretty tough things. It also truly excels at its shooting and cover system and they both blend to create and enjoyable ride. The crafting and scavenging in the game is the real MVP though due to its simplicity and the need to use it.
In a survival horror game, the monsters can make or break the entire game, and I'm happy to report that TLOU has intense, compelling, and downright creepy monsters, or Infected as they say in the game. The Infected are truly a sight to behold due to never having any other zombie like creatures in a game quite like this. Each type of Infected have their own unique strategies in order to beat them and blending these strategies can be difficult but rewarding. The Infected are truly a strong point in this game.
But like in all other games or movies of the survival horror genre, the humans are the real monsters, and in TLOU there are some real crazy human antagonists. These range from military to hunters, to cannibals, and even to freedom fighters. The humans also have different strategies in order to take them out as they are not as simple minded as the infected, and the fresh blend between humans and infected are what makes the gameplay of TLOU a true experience.
The visuals and the sound in this game are also top notch. I would sometimes just sit on the tops of roofs to take in the beautiful scenery, or watch closely as Joel and Ellie speak just to see their wonderful character designs. The voice acting in this game is absolutely second to none. Troy Baker is a juggernaut in the business, and his performance as Joel is breathtaking. Ashley Johnson as Ellie is one of if not the greatest performance by voice actor in a video game to date. She is absolutely stunning as this brilliant character.
The game also has a multiplayer that i haven't dived into that much but, I can tell you that it is fun from my little experiences. The sense of exploration is also present in this game as the visuals make you want to explore, and the interesting collectibles you can find are all worth a second play through.
In conclusion I didnt find a single flaw in this game. It is a game that proves that video games can have just the same if not more depth than movies and books. It is a game that will stand the test of time. IT is a game that has not only defined one but two generations. It is a game that should be delved deep into for years as people examine and find its symbolic meanings and deep character growth. The Last of Us is a game that everyone should play and behold the masterpiece that they have had the privilege of experiencing.
Final Verdict: A 10 out 10
